I'm sure you've heard about Cogmed's Working Memory Training software from Pearson. There is empirical research to support it's efficacy for elementary children who have working memory deficits. For example, it can foster improvements in attention/concentration, fluid reasoning, mathematics, and reading comprehension. I would estimate that it's likely to improve written expression skills as well, since good working memory is needed for multitasking the various components of good writing (e.g., planning, organizing, self-monitoring, capitalization/punctuation, spelling, grammar, etc.). Training 5 students at a time costs $1000.00. Ms. Toni Perretta, one of the school psychologists from our regional group, has tried to implement this training in a small group of children in Lord Selkirk School Division, with some positive results.
