You may be familiar with the NEPSY-II's Social Perception battery, which encompasses the Affect Recognition and Theory of Mind subtests. But, there is another interesting test that looks at affect recognition called the Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Behavior (DANVA)-2. It examines a student's affect recognition using both a visual as well as an auditory modality. I've found it useful to discover the deficits in affect recognition experienced by students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. For one boy, I found that he had trouble knowing when other children looked angry or sad, but he was better able to detect how other's felt through their voice tone. So, it was recommended that his teacher emphasize certain voice tones to convey feelings until he was taught the facial expressions that were associated with anger or sadness. The DANVA-2 was developed at Emory University by Dr. Marshall Duke and Dr. Stephen Nowicki, Jr., and can be administered on a stand alone computer or via the internet.
